VEZILKA Brings Artificial Intelligence into Secondary Education

Starting with the 2026/27 school year, high school students across North Macedonia will be able to choose a new elective subject, “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence.” The 36-hour curriculum was developed within the VEZILKA project, in cooperation with the Bureau for Development of Education (BDE), and has now been officially published as part of the country’s secondary education programme.

The new subject will introduce students to the fundamentals of artificial intelligence, practical use of AI tools, prompting, fact-checking, AI-generated content, and safe, ethical and responsible use. To prepare teachers for its introduction, VEZILKA organised an initial online training on 2 and 3 September 2026, bringing together teachers from high schools across the country. Participants responded very positively to the training, highlighting VEZILKA’s support as an important part of their preparation for introducing the new subject in the classroom.

The rollout of “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” represents a first concrete step towards the national integration of AI into education, one of VEZILKA’s key objectives in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science and the BDE. The initiative is designed to give students more than familiarity with AI tools — it aims to build the judgement, confidence and digital literacy they will need to navigate a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.

VEZILKA will continue to support teachers as the subject is introduced in schools and to develop additional resources that can strengthen AI education across the country.
